History: Saw his first real combat during the War, specifically the Trinidad Evacuation fiasco. The squadron he was attached to were scrambled from a base in Florida early the morning of the attack on the city of Trinidad. They flew none stop into Cuba, refueling and jumping on to the USS Abraham Lincoln for refuel and repairs. Of thirty gunships scrambled from Virginia, three had been lost in-flight over the ocean to malfunctions, and seven were grounded at Cuba for similar reasons.
When they reached the flotilla with the Abraham Lincoln, the pilots saw the first of the evacuees being air-lifted out of the beleaguered city. Two hours later, the first of the gunships were sortied to provide close-air support for the troops fighting to keep the airfield and docks open for the thousands still trapped in the city.
Over the course of the next few days, Carver and the other pilots flew countless sorties and nearly two-thirds of the gunships out of Florida were lost to enemy action. Many pilots under estimated the abilities of the demons, and many important lessons were learned.
